hard drive noises

sorry for the newb post but im just not certain.

my hard drive started making a loud screeching noise today and it wont stop. my power supply is good. is the hard drive going to die or what? should i hurry up and back up my data before its too late?

again, sorry for the stupid post. but thanks for any thoughts u have

If it's making noises it doesn't usually make, it's usually a bad sign. Best to break out the CDRs.

A high screeching may be the heads coming into contact with the drive itself, or it may be the bearings going bad. Back-up, back-up, back-up! Quickly

i just backed everything to a 60 gig hard drive. should i just keep using the hard drive, while backing up any important stuff until it dies? i really dont care about losing any small bits of data. the only thing that matters are that 1. it wont effect system performance, 2. the noise isnt TOO loud, 3. it damages my power supply or other hardware.

Thats all very well but it will probably destroy large amounts of data. It will probably affect system performance too. Disclaimer: Use at your own risk.

remove the drive and put it in your freazer for about 2 hours.
It will come back to life for awhile

screeching noise from a HD, that sounds bad. Go pick yourself up a bigger, badder, and faster HD.
