The hard drive in our server died: Western Digital Caviar WD300BB-00AUA1, 30GB, dated 29 Jan 2001 (it died last week). It was mounted in a standard mid-tower case (enlight 7237), but the case was lieing on its side. It was running roughly 2.5 years of near constant operation (it was a server, so on nearly 24/7).

Are there any known problems with this drive? or just bad luck? did lieing on its side have anything to do with the failure? I just bought two seagate drives as replacements (raid 1), should I turn the case upright?

the drive lying on it's side had nothing to do it, i'm almost positive.

many cases (Lian Li's most notably) have hard drive racks where the drives lay on their sides.

I haven't heard any problems w/ WD's. So i don't think it was a specific problem either.

Maybe it just finally gave out, or maybe theres something else wrong w/ the system? My hard drive just recently died also, later I found out it was the PSU's fault. The whole system has been running virtually problem free for 2 years now, but the cheap generic psu decided to die, and take the hdd out w/ it. Something like that could have happened?

i'm no expert though. not by a long shot.

modern HDDs can be run in any oreintation, and can change oreintation, back in the bad old days there where issues, long solved now.
