Hard drive locks my computer up

I am trying to pull some data off an older hard drive I have not used in awhile. It is a WD 400BB. Whenever I attach this drive to my system, it gets to the detecting hard drives spot on the bootup and then locks the computer. I have to hit the reset button to get it to response. Any ideas on how to get the data or what might be happening here?

Agreed. Try the different settings for master, I have seen drives incorrectly labelled.
Try the drive on a cable with no other drives.

Try another cable.
I had a cable cause a perfectly good drive to corrupt so badly it just clicked and failed all repairs in Windows.
I used a bootble CD of HDD Regenerator to recover it.
Most here use Spinrite.
 
i tried every different jumper combination possible. I did not try a different cable, so that is a possibility. I did put the drive on its own ide cable when I was trying the different jumper settings. Anything?
 
And that goes without saying, thank you. Usually I can find my own solution to problems. I was splicing fiber optics when I was 10. This one has me stumped.
 
Check no pins on the hard disk or the motherboard are bent where the cable plugs in.
I cant think of much else unfortunately, I may do better after some sleep.

Unless the PC you are using it on is old and the BIOS doesnt support hard disks that big?
