I was sitting there copying files on my hard drives when I realized i wanted to see which hard drive was working.

i hacked pin 39's wire on the ide cable and cut the same wire next to the system board connector. i then ran the wire from the hardrive to the front of my case and wired it to a led and put a 180 ohm resistor on the other side.
At this point i needed to find +5 volts, so i looked around and found a nearby sata power adapter. I tore that apart easy enough and put the wire in and then closed it back up.
It still works too

problem solved :)

ill take some pictures of behind the bezel and the ide cable tomorrow

pardon messed up case and im sorry for being a day late i got absorbed into a mod

a glimpse of my current mod: a 7/12 volt fanbus with indicator leds!

so did you just disconnect pin 39 all together? or did you split the wire?
i disconnected it so the system board doesnt see the activity, too bad it doesnt work for cdroms

pin 39 is the 3rd one from the side if you use a 80 conductor 40 conductors its the 2nd wire

edit:use pictures as a semi guide for wich side

yea, i know which one pin 39 is, thanks :) and how many volt does it put out? 3ish or what?(olny have an analog multimeter, so i cannot get very accurate readins :/)

my rig doesnt use the ide cable i used it as a ground i used the 5 volt rail and a resistor to suit the led i cut it so i only get the wire from the hardrive, no other ide device or mobo
i read this from a moding site but i cant find it, as long as you use the 5v rail you will be alright use bit-tech's led calculator operating voltage for most leds are below 3 volts so dont worry about it

i want to do this with an rgb led, would be kinda cool to see all the pretty color combos you could make by doing drive to drive transfers.

well, i did this, and the LED was really dim..i think it needs more volts...how would i go about doing that?

less resistance in the resistor

I should do this with my SLK3700AMB since it already has 3 HDD LED's there wouldn't be as much wiring

you use the 5 volt rail not ground you just convert the 5 volt rail to viable voltage using a resisitor goes like this hdd>led>resistor>+5v on molex or w/e
