Hard drive issue... I/O error when trying to get data

Have a 200G Maxtor drive in a USB case. Suddnely started giving errors when either trying to delete a file or copy a file. The error message always notes the file name and a generic "cannot delete/copy (filename) due to I/O Error".

I can access the drive just fine from Explorer and even run Chkdsk on the drive. Anytime I try to delete or move data is when I get the error.

Any ideas for getting the data off this drive. I've read about freezing the drive but seems to have no impact at all.
 
the freezing trick is to troubleshoot one specific problem, not an "i/o error".

Have you tried connecting it via IDE, not USB? What does maxtor's diagnostics say? Can you clone it?
 
Glad to hear about the freezing and the I/O error. Didn't get that from the resource. I have not tried connecting it to IDE. I did get a diagnostic error (deafa379) from PowerMax. HDD is out of warranty. Very long one year warranty. :rolleyes:

I plugged this drive into one of my swappable bays. Been copying data over. But suddenly I got another I/O error. This one read "Cannot copy [filename] : Data Error (Cyclic Redundancy Check)".

By the way what is the freezing process good for?
 
bad disk looks like, run the full checkdisk, check for bad sectors, recover et,
