With a hard drive used as a storage drive how long does it take after writing to go into idle mode?

Is it instant?

I am looking at power usage specs one hard drive has a much higher write power consumption but it's idle power consumption is just slighly higher than another drive.

So will it be running on idle power anytime it is not actually writing or reading a file?
Or only after 5 - 10 mins for example?

Most of the time the computer is on the hard drive will not be actually reading/writing but it will not have had long enough to go into sleep, so will it be in idle?

Depends on the power settings in windows, raid/chipset controller management software.

As well as the settings of the drive itself. WD Green drives (for example), especially some of the older revisions would sleep in as little as 5 seconds and park the heads in as little as 8. Some manufacturers offer utilities which allow you to override the default settings on some of their models.
