I currently have a Maxtor 120GB ata/133 hard drive. I want to get a new hard drive but I'm not sure which one to get. I want to get at least a 250gb hdd, I would get two 200gb hdd if I can find a good deal on them. What is the performance difference between sata and sata II, also do all sata II drives have the 3.0gb/s spec. Also when I get my new hard drive should I slave it to my current hdd, or should I reformat my current hdd and slave it to my new one. If it won't take much of a performance hit I would prefer to slave the new hdd to the old one, bc I have things on it that I won't be able to recover if I format it. I have about $120 to spend, I don't want/have to spend it all, but I can if needed. My mobo supports sata II 3.0gb/s. If the hdd is used that is fine as long as it's in good condition, but I prefer new. Thx for the help.
 
there isn't yet any performance difference between SATA I and SATA II but there are differences such as SATA II is hotswapable SATA I isn't and SATA II fully supports NCQ for nonsequential reads, some SATA I drives support NCQ and some don't. As for 'slaving' your new drive to the old drive the SATA Bus eliminates the master/slave as you only attach one drive per channel. For best performance I would get 2 identical SATA I / II drives and RAID them. Transfer any files you want from your IDE drive and then format the IDE and use it for a backup drive fo your critical files.
 
So what your saying is that I won't be able to use both drives at the same time? I'm just not used to sata/sata II, I really need to update myself on this technology. I was hoping to use both drives to give myself about 412GB combined storage space.

Sata drives don't become slaves or masters, they get their own channel all to themselves. You would be able to use multiple drives at once, IDE or sata or some combination of both. But you can't make sata drives slave or master.

I'd suggest a WD2500KS. $97 with a cable, or $93 without. Buying from ZZF as linked is also recommended, because of their shipping procedures.

 
I already have two 18in sata cables so that's not a problem, :D. Thx for the recommendation, I think I am prolly gonna go with that one or the 320gb version, not sure yet, :confused:.
