Which should I go for...

Western Digital Raptor 36GB - 10000RPM, 8MB Cache, SATA150 (OEM) $149.00

or....

Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 10 200GB - 7200RPM, 16MB Cache, SATA150 (OEM) $129.95

Would it be a lot better to get the extra speed... I've heard HDDs are quite the bottlenecks...

im fairly new to this but i would guess most would tell you to get a 74g raptor for operating system and the maxtor for storage

I don't know where you would go to pay $150 for a 36gb raptor, but that is rape if I've ever seen it on drive prices.
74gb raptor for $175 shipped
36gb raptor for $105 shipped

Avoid the 36gb raptor. Not only does it run hotter and louder, but it is slower than it's more advanced brother the 74gb

In terms of speed, the DM10 is no slouch in the 7200RPM SATA arena; it's the fastest. But it's still trails the 74gb raptor
It all comes down to whether you need the extra space or not
If you can afford it, get a large 7200RPM storage drive and a 74gb raptor for your OS and applications

The Maxtor 16MB drive is faster(!), bigger, quieter, and cheaper than the 36GB Raptor. End of story.

I have the 250GB 16MB cache Maxtor, its actually quieter than my 80GB LBD maxtor i bought a few years ago.

I am not a major player towards any brand, all 6 drives I own are Maxtors, or Quantums (now owned by maxtor); but thats just because they were the cheapest when i was shopping. I have had to return one, back when they had a 75% failure rate, but since then have had no problems.

I would say the Maxtor just cause of the price and the amount. But others will feel different.
