I need to buy a 2nd hard drive for my dell 8400... I was thinking about a 250gb HD. Probably a WD HD. I was wondering if it matters what kind of HD I have currently installed. Also... does it matter what kind of HD I get? Do I have to check if everything else in the computer is compatible?
 
Well it depends on how you are going to install the drive. If the drive is going to be on it's own cable then it doesnt matter what type really except for scsi and sata2(maybe sata if you don't have a mobo that supports sata). You should probably stick within the 8 or 16mb buffer unless you need a budget hard drive(which I assume you don't since you're picking up a 250gb).

If you plan on this second hard drive being on a cable with another drive then you need to make sure the hard drive you buy is the same speed as the drive on the cable otherwise your comp will decide that it doesn't like to boot up all the way. If your mobo supports it I recomend an sata hard drive. But that's just my $0.02.

edit: lol I just looked at your sig and noticed the drive you have in there is an sata. Pick up an sata drive w/ at least 8mb cache and you will be happy. Check the stickies for further info on drive choices.

One of the 320GB WD SATA drives for $140 from the [H]otDeals section should fit your bill pretty damned well.
