Hard Drive problem I posted on another Forum, with little or no response Hoping to get better here...

OK hoping for some help here as I am fearing the worst.

Scenario:
My system ran with 2 HD, I upgraded my HD, and swapped out one for another PC.

Had 80 GB WD and 40 GB WD, I bought a 120 GB Sata drive, and was going to pop the 40 GB into my TV/Movie box.

When I pulle the 40 Gig, and tried to format it, it went about 1% on the format and then just hung there for about 1 hr. I powered off the PC, and pulled out the HD, replaced it with a 20 G and same thing happened. 1% then hang.

So I put the 40 Gig in my wifes PC, and attempted a format on a machine which already had Windows XP installed, and it recognized the HD, but still wont format.

Same thing happened with the 20 Gig.

Any suggestions on how I can get these 2 HD's formatted, Windows recognizes them, Bios recognizes them, but they just seem to refuse to format.

Thanx.
*********** EDIT ***********
Found a utility on Western Digitals Website, for diagnosing and formatting HDs, 2 flavors, DOS and Win.. Tried the DOS one, and it reported that there were numerous read errors on the HD. and that it was useless. Tried the Win version, and it saw the drive, and formated it NTFS up to 40 GB .. . so it appears to be working now..
I am installing WinXP on it now.. we shall see how it goes.

***************** Follow Up *******************************

Windows Installed, but when attempting to load SP1, multiple write failures, and when rebooted, loads up the Windows Screen, then hangs, and reboots.

Running Autoclave on it now .. see how that does.

well your addendums pretty much cover my recommendations
you should also review > Corruption 101
one after the other is very suspicious, not sure how many more HDDs Id try in that 1st computer

Well, I now have the 40gb drive in yet another PC, and it would not format there either. Booted into the XP recovery Console, and ran CHKDSK /R on it, and it has been 16hrs, and it says 75% completed. (it has been at 75% for over 8 hrs)

I will reveiw your corruption 101 post and see if that can shed any more light on the subject.

In the meantime, I think tonight I will try an old 6GB klunker I got sittin on a shelf in that Demon Posessed PC and see if that corrupts also ...

offhand it sounds like the HDD has real problems
likely the circuit board possibly an ESD event when you changed them up
and that if possible you should get an RMA
grab the error codes off the DOS version

Well the drive is dead.. warranty on it expired on 7/9/2004... go figure. freezing the HD now and then gonna smash it with a hammer and play with the magnets..

Thanx for the input and replies guys,
