hard drive failed to initialize

So I plugged in a 40 GB hard drive I had laying around and went to "my computer" but it didnt show up. So I went to the disk management area and saw the drive there but it was not formatted so i right clicked and went to initalize and it started then froze and my computer restarted. Now when i go into BIOS or the computer management area that had drive doesnt show up at all. Is it toast?

Do you have your windows startup disk lying around? recovery disc? If you do put it in and boot from it when prompted after the POST. It should identify the harddrive and tell you about any partitions. if the harddrive doesnt have anything importaint on it, delete the old partition and make one again. Don't install windows on it though, it will give you trouble if you do. once you have that partition, exit and boot normaly. You should see the harddrive by now, if so format it, and that should work.
