Has anyone tried out these hard drive enclosures and are they any good?

I have a 160 GB IDE drive that I'm thinking of making into an external HD. I don't have any firewire ports so it'd need to be USB 2.0. Do you think it would be better to go this route or just buy another (external) hard drive straight out of the box since hard drives are getting really cheap now?

My friend bought one of those external enclosurs with Firewire and USB and it worked great.
USB1.1 is really slow though so if you don't have USB2 on your machine, I'd recommend getting a USB2 card.
It took about 16 hours to copy 30gigs from 3 networked drives to the USB drive using USB1.1.

I just bought a WD 1200JB and this, it works great. I backed up 66GB's in under 40mins. The fastest I've seen yet is 23.7megs a sec.:D
 
yes but eSATA will give you the true HDD throughput somewhere between 50>30MB/s STR
(and they employ PATA HDDs the SATA bridge is built into the enclosure)

My testing of PCI connected ports show they typically have a much slower maximum speed of 100 - 130Mb/s compared to typically 250Mb/s to 330Mb/s when directly connected to the motherboard, cabling (you might be surprised how much re-transmission is occurring - slowing things down), the device driver used, implementation of the USB device and the implementation of the application software.
