Hard Drive DOA?

well i have a Western digital harddrive, it doesnt light the HDD activity light nor can it be partitioned i want to know if theres anything else besides it being DOA that could be causing these problems

the lack of lights could be that the hard drive LED could be wired wron on the motherboard or missing. as for it not partitioning, how are you doing it? do you get an error message when you try to create a partition?

Does your bios recognize the drive?

Well, if he's using teh western digital secure connect he would still need to plug the power into it. So asking if power is connected is a legitimate question.

I guess is this sata or pata is a better question, does the bios recognize it? What drive is it?

You should also check the jumpers on the drive. I've had issues like that when running a single drive thats set to "Master". Try setting the drive to both "Master" and "Cable Select", also check your hd light to be sure its plugged in properly.

If its a Western Digital drive... and it's the ONLY drive in the case ... and is IDE... set the drive to be "single". To do this... just remove the jumper, and the drive will be set as "single".

If more than one drive, make sure that you have your jumpers are properly set to cable select, or master/slave. If SATA.. make sure that your cables are plugged in firmly. They have a tendancy not to make good contact at times.

Is your HDD IDE or SATA? We need more info....

If it is infact DOA, just RMA it. do the advance, they'll send u the drive, once you get it you send the defect. In the meantime you have time to work on it

um its IDE, power is in and its failing to partition using the windows XP install disk, at first i had it at Master with a slave and it wouldnt boot cd, then i realized there was a master single selection last night and it got further, msi k8n neo2 plat regonizes it and i have triple check hdd activity light

btw off topic question is there a advanced menu for a Msi k8n neo2 plat? and how do you get into it
