Hard drive disk usage at 100 percent?

I have an older IDE hard drive that I recently attached an IDE - SATA adapter to and now when lookign in Nvidia Monitor the disk usage will jump to 100 percent for no apparent reason, Im not playong a game, downloading anything, or defragmenting the disk. I honestly dont know if this was happening before or not, but it is worrying me. Should I go back to using the original IDE cable, or is this normal for this sort of thing. Thank you for any help.
