Hi!

My external HD, my book 500GB made some clicking noises last night and is not recognized in windows anymore.

I plug it in a different computer and it still makes the clicking noises, but windows detects it and install it as an external mass storage device. However, it is not listed in my computer and under "computer management" it says that the disk needs to be initialized....I tried to initialize it, but then it gives me an I/O error...

Do I have any options here....

Sorry, no. The drive has failed. If you have a second, matching drive, you could try swapping the controller board from a working drive to yours. This would correct the problem if it was the controller board that was fried.

The second option is to seal it up in a zip lock baggie and place the drive in a freezer for an hour or two. Then take it out, connect it and see if you can get anything off of it.

Using both options, I've had about a 60% success rate but YMMV

Hi!

Thanks for the suggestions about the HD....

This thing is very important to me....So I will consider the swap with an identical drive....but can you be a little more specific on that?

How do I go about it? what exactly do I swap?

TIA!
