Can I have my hard drive run a self diagnostic on itself? Can I do using DOS? If so, please explain the process.

Thanks again!

Well, most motherboards use S.M.A.R.T. testing to monitor possible problems on the horizon. If your mothereboard has it, I would reccomend enabling it in the BIOS. Also, most harddrive manufacturers have a downloadable software test (creates a bootable floppy) to test the harddrive with........and they usually run in a DOS environment. What motherboard and harddrive do you have? What problem are you having to make you want to test it? I hope it hasnt already been BORKED. ;)

Maybe it would be helpful to give this information:

HP Pavilion ZE1250 AMD Athlon-it's about 3 years old

It's not my computer, so that's all I know for now.

Well, that came with either a Fijitsu 20 gig drive, an Ibm 30 gig, or a Toshiba 30 gig.

As far as I could see, the others didnt offer a specific utility to diagnose thier drives.
But you still havnt said what the problem is thats making you want to check the drive out.
Also, whats the operating system?
