Hard Drive Debate

Well here's what I'm debating.

I have a 250GB and a 200GB harddrive in my computer. I'm debating if I would see a lot of improvement if I installed my OS and the Windows pagefile onto a Seagate 36GB 10,000 RPM drive.

The Drive is a SCSI drive and I have a SCSI PCI card. However the card only does 40mbps. Do you think it would benefit performace? If so by how much? How much more performace would I get than

1) a Seagate 120GB 7200 8MB HD
2) Getting a 160mbps SCSI card?

Honestly, from my experience, the headaches involved with SCSI aren't worth the performance gain (if any) on a general purpose desktop machine.

Hardrives will always be a bottleneck, but just for load times and occasional file access, better to just live with it.
 
I wouldn't bother. The performance increase wouldn't be large enough to benefit the time and money, IMO. Any gain would be transparent as most computing environments don't pull enough to warrant very high data transfer speeds. If you find your computer is dumping gigs of data to the pagefile, then it may be worth looking into. Otherwise, I'd pick the cheaper and simpler route.
 
If your SCSI card has a max data rate of 40 mbps, you'd be absolutely hurting in terms of loading anything, since that is roughly 5 MB/s, which is slow for anyone.

Most 7K 8MB hard drives you can buy today are 50-60 MB/s transfer rate, and I would just say live with the load times. It's not like 10 seconds is forever.
 
Another check in the no column. If the drive were either U320 or a larger U160 and if you already had a controller it would be a no brainer. However, a decent controller will set you back around the same amount as a nice big SATA drive that would perform almost as good.

Also those drives are fairly loud and get pretty hot. And any boost in windows loading is nullified by sitting through the controller bios @ post. I would encourage you to experiment with the SCSI setup as another drive but not the primary if you have time to kill or just want to learn. :)

With scsi it probably means 40 megabytes/sec. Not quite so bad.

What generation is the drive?
