Hard drive death approaching?

No earlier than last night, I was simply surfing and listening to some music as I normally do on my rig when I decided to shut down for a few hours. Upon my return, I noticed that the windows xp boot took literally 10 times longer than it normally does (about 30 some odd rotations of that blue bar). A few restarts later and the problem seemed to go away. Fast forward about 1 hour later, I noticed simple things like firefox would take minutes to load and after another restart, the boot problems returned. Everything takes exponentially longer to load.

Now, I ask if this is a hard drive problem because my second drive (my 160 gb WD storage drive on the EXACT same ide channel) loads things like a champ and after additional speed tests, I know the second drive is running top notch. On the other hand, the primary 60 gb drive came back with these results :

As you can see, I'm being beaten by a usb drive :( . Again, my second drive on the ecact same ide chan performs perfectly. This does not. Any help would be appreciated, thank you.
 
I had a Maxtor 40GB do like that, except that it was benching < 1MB/sec and couldn't play MP3s. It never did die completely until I threw it out and the garbage truck ate it.
 
oooooh wow yeah that's not looking good. The only thing I can think of is to check the device manager and make sure that DMA is still active on the drives. A friend of mine's box once decided that it randomly was going to use PIO mode instead of DMA for the hard drive...you can imagine how much the disk performance changed lol.
 
U-DMA mode 5 is enabled on both drives. I tried reseating the ide cable, changing jumper settings and using different cables entirely... no dice. Again, second drive is as fast as ever, just not the os/primary drive. :(
 
You might want to back your data up right away, just in case. It certainly does sound like something is very wrong. If your other drive is operating fine, we can rule out chipset drivers. Even having DMA off would be faster than that. Get the diag tool from the drive maker's site and test it out.
