Hard drive dead or no?

Hey guys,

so i got a 30 gig maxtor from a friends dell pc, i replaced his drive with a 120gb.

Im curious, the drive shows up in the bios, but it is not recognized by windows. When i try to install windows on it, the computer doesnt see it. Its like its there, but not recognized.

anyways i can get it running or is it gone?
 
You could either run maxtors disk utility or plug it into a working machine and check in the disk management section of mmc to get some insight as to what is going on.

 
Right click on my computer, click on manage. Go to disk management, right click on the new hard disk and select format.
