Hard Drive Crashing Computer

So, I'm putting together a computer with some parts i had lying around, and when i booted for the first time to put windows on, it loaded up fine, right untill it says "now starting windows", and a i get a nasty blue screen, forcing me to reboot. When i use a different hard drive, it works absolutely fine, no blue screen and i can install windows.

what gives? is the HD dead or can it be salvaged?
