Hey guys -

When we get client computers in to format or if we need to backup harddrives, we generally plug the drive into a "bitch" windows xp machine, and cut or copy the files off the harddrive.

Sometimes however this doesn't work as expected and leaves us spending more time either trying to boot into Knoppix(which generally doesn't work), or by verifying some data.

What is the best solution to copy data off a harddrive. I would prefer some solution that i can plug the drive into a secondary controller, and run a program before i got into windows or the operating system. Or if not that then some windows solution. Also i mean if the drive is crashed what woudl be the best method of retrieving data. Again if the drive is semi failed we plug it into windows and pull as much data as possible.

Thanks

I've used Jufsoft BadCopy [1] and Search and Recover [2] if you really want the data, the cost is totally worth it. Jufsoft is better for bad data and Iolo is better for deleted data.

I don't know what shops that only do recovery use, but I have used both of these at various times and find them good enough for what I need them for. Especially since you can try them for free :)

I use Acronis True Image at work and backup tons of infected machines with it. It does not always boot on all machines, but i would say on 90% it works great:)
