Hard drive cooling solutions?

I am thinking of getting a fan/cooling system that can help cool down my HDD. It is getting hot this time of year again, and my WD FALS 1TB HDD is getting in the low 40s (degree C).

My GTX 260 is too big and covers my 120mm fan that would cool down the HDDs. I plan on replacing it with a smaller card so I can fit my 120mm, but I don't have the money for such an upgrade at the moment.

So I am looking at something that can mount into the 3.5 inch bays that can blow some air onto my HDD to bring the temps down a bit. Do such cooling solutions even work? Looking at newegg it seems like most are rather cheap and fail a lot. I am preferably looking for something that doesn't install onto the HDD itself. Just something that takes up a 3.5 slot with some fans to blow onto the HDD. Does such a product exist?

Anyone know of a decent HDD cooling solution?

And finally, before I buy anything, is 45-50 degrees C even much to worry about?
 
Why not jsut suspend an 80 MM fan below the HD? It should be small enough to fit, and give pleanty of airflow to cool off the HD.

Take 4 rubber bands (one for through each screw hole spot) and tie them in through the drive cage, tensioning them the fand doesn't move around when turned on. Point it so it blows air up on the HD. As long as you do it right so the rubber bands don't get damaged and break over time, it will be as reliable as the fan itself, give better cooling, and be cheaper to boot.

Kinda like this, but using 4 bands instead of two since it has the spinning fins:

Or you could not worry about your hard drive being in the low 40's since that is perfectly well within operating limits ;)

Seriously though, I've had 15+ drives that have been running between 45 and 50C in my Norco 4220 for over 2 years nonstop with no issues.
 
Thanks for the replies. If these are normal temps then I won't worry. But I do have a spare 80mm fan with no place to mount it. So I'll check and see if there is a way I can rig it so it will fit into my case and get some more airflow.

The google study. The overall best temperature range for hard drives seems to be 35-40C. Scroll down to page 6. Just because you have had good luck so far doesn't put statistics on your side :p
 
the 1001FALS runs VERY hot, mines been ~50c running almost 24/7 for 2 years now. with or without active cooling

So it is designed to run this hot, or does it mean I should expect it to live a short life?
 
Antec Sonnata 3 500. Not a good case for gaming obviously. Wish I knew that before buying.
