In my quest for silence, I've replaced pretty much all noise producing componants in my system with quieter replacements...except for 2 things, my hard drives (a pair of 40GB disks) While in opperation, they emit a whining noise which I would love to get rid of.

So, I've been looking over different vendors websites for hard-drive silencers and I've found several different products, so I'm wondering if you guys have any recommendations.

I've got plenty of 5.25 bays available as well as 3.5 bays, so size does not matter, just so long as it's effective.

Thanks guys!

until you find a permanent solution, you can try and reduce case resonance. i dunno if youve already got big rubber grommets for their mounting, but you can try this:

take two fat rubber bands and stretch em across a 5.25 bay, one toward the front and one toward the back, or whichever way can support a HD. lay a drive on em.

try http://www.silentpcreview.com for info. they got a forum. oh, but dont listen to the people that undervolt and underclock their processors for the sake of quiet fans, cause duh.

Perfect solution if you had a watercooled system- watercooled HDD's.

The mass of the aluminum block cuts the amplitude of vibrations out by magnitudes; the thermal paste dissipates the vibrational energy as heat, and the block covers the most 'vocal' parts of the HDD- i.e. the drive motor and the voice coils for the heads.

The perfect solution.

swear to god! theyre there! ive said it before.. some of em would turn their 2500+ into a 2000+ rather than hear air move.

There was that project where the guy watercooled his harddrives in a sound insulated box. But that requires watercooling *shrug*
