Is it really neccessary? I've been reading about the Zalmon HD cooler and the CoolDrive 3. None of them tell you why its needed to cool a HD. I'd assume the cooler the better if anything, but is there any real reason why this should be done.

Also does anyone own both of these coolers? If so, which one cools better and is quieter? Thanks

I dont own either of them.....what I do have though is a 80GB SATA Maxtor drive running at like 26C with nothing but a couple 80mm 32cfm intake fans blowing on it at the front of the case.

Unless someones case airflow/temps are REALLY horrible I see no reason why you'd actually NEED some kind of extra harddrive cooling....but tha's up to you. A lot of people will honestly just buy the coolers for looks.....because if your case temps are below like 30C and you've got at least one intake blowing on the drive you should NOT have to worry about anything. For peole with enough 5.25" bays who're running raid, or just some high RPM drivers one of these coolers might be more suiting.....as the heat buildup WILL be slightly more promenent/accelerated in that smaller tank.
 
Regardless of whether you need to or not most expensive cases will come with some form of fan positioned blowing on the drivebays. It doesn't hurt to keep your HDD's cool and in the case of already having the fan it costs nothing extra.

Exactly, the only way I'd consider a harddrive cage/cooler is if I was gonna start mounting them in 5.25" bays....away from the (usually present) front intake fans.
 
I use them.... partly for looks.. and just to have alittle extra cooling.. i had an old harddrive die.. and i'm pretty sure it was due to heat...

If it actually WAS an old harddrive I highly doubt it was running hot enough to break down....unless you had horrible case temps and no airflow in your box. I dunno, with any kind of intake down by your HD cage I really dont find it necessary to plunk down extra cash on a cooler for the drive.....but to each his own.

It wans't that old.. about 1 1/2 years... and i had decent air flow in the case.. but there is pretty much no way to get air into the HDD area... upon it's death, it was on fire practically...

maybe a bearing cage got lose or something and caused the extra heat.. but you know what??? does it really matter.. i feel more comfortable with extra cooling

Harddrives are very sensetive to heat by the way.... it's not very good to get them too cold too..

I know exactly what you mean dude......better safe then sorry for sure with stuff like this.

I know they're overly sensitive.....which is why I'm always petrified to see ppl that actually have case temps of 40C or higher....poor little drives. :p

Wow, way to dig up an old thread there bro. :p

From what I've seen and heard, the Cooldrive is a very nice unit. My friend just bought a couple SATA drives and has them both in Cooldrive 6's running Raid0 and the devices kick ass.

Not only are the drives and coolers completely silent.....the LCD is fairly customizable and the range of different readouts the cooldrives provide is pretty nice. They even automatically detected and read out his Raid array properly without any work even when the documentation said they wouldnt. :p
