I have been using a Vantec hard drive cooler with Evercool fans, and while it performed well, the fans wore out quickly and I ended up unplugging them because all the cleaning and WD40 I could throw at it wouldn't stop the godawful racket. This must not have been a good idea, because the hard drive ended up overheating and crashing when I thought that the passive heatsink would help enough in a well cooled system.

Can any of you think of some hard drive coolers that have performed well over a year? I need one that screws to the bottom of the drive, because I dont' have any free bays. I have found a few that look good, but they all use the same crappy Evercool fans (50mm, I think).

im not sure about this but doesnt WD40 damage the fans?
i THINK (not sure) that u should be using a different type of lubricant...ionno thats what i've heard

Just where is your drive and what case do you have? The answer depends on those factors :) I put my SATA Raptor drives in mobile racks that already have little fans in them. If I were just mounting them in the case I wouldn't bother with a HD fan if I had good ventilation.

Don't put WD-40 on anything in your computer!!! Go to the electronic store (not RS) and ask them for the special stuff that costs like $15-$20 a spray can and use sparingly.

Well, depending on how hot your drive gets, you can always do what I did. It just so happens that they make a hole-saw bit(for a drill) the *exact* same diameter as the inside diameter of an 80mm fan. So, if you can spare two(well, 3, including where the hd goes) 5 1/2" drive bays, do the following:

Take two drive covers, and tape them together like they would sit in the case. Take the holesaw, mark out the center with a marker, and then drill out a hole. Then, drill holes to attach your 80mm case fan to the drive bay covers. Mount the fan so it blows in. Then, get one of those adapters that'll let you mount your hd into a 5 1/2" bay, and mount it in the spot just below where you plan to mount your front case fan thingy that you just made. I did this for my maxtor 120gig 7200rpm hd that I just got recently as I found it was running a bit warm, and now it's never even warm to the touch.

Why is WD40 bad for my computer? Does it conduct electricity? If it does, I'm in trouble. What are some examples of products that would work better? I have only seen people recommend vague products with no names.

I think I'm probably going to buy something like this: http://www.buyextras.com/silalhardriv.html. It looks like trash, but the fan is 80mm, so it will be easy easy to replace it one that doesn't suck (I don't think anybody makes good 50mm fans to use with my old cooler). An aluminum cooler with a decent 80mm fan would probably work great for me.

Passive cooling is not a good solution because, like I said, the drive overheated and crashed under passive cooling. The drive was right on top of an intake, and that was as close as I could get it to any fan in the case. It's pretty clear to me that I need active cooling.

This is the old cooler: http://www.buyextras.com/dualfanhardr2.html. The design of the heatsink is great, but the fans are absolute junk.

This is good advice, but all of my drive bays are taken. Fortunately, it looks like there is a commercial solution where I can mount an 80mm on the bottom of my drive with no sacrificed drive bay. I know that I can depend on an 80mm fan!

If you go to www.wd40.com you will see a lot of ways to use the stuff. I don't think it is advised on any electrical stuff. It is known to melt certain types of plastics and other synthetics. Not sure if it is electrically conductive, but it is a petrochemical product so caveat emptor :(

If you were to 'melt' your HSF into your CPU core, you might actually get REALLY REALLY EXTREMELY good thermal performance. :p

the zalman heatpipe coolers are very good and require no fans. I'd advise a ncie fan blowing over them for even greater cooling but the zalamana are like 25$

Hmmm. Ive been very happy with my raptor, it has 2 80mm front fans blowing on it. I kinda want a silent system, has anyone tried those drive enclosures? How did they effect temp.? I am expecting my full 5 years out of this thing:D
