I was sleeving the wires of my PSU and screwed most of my computer. I already bought a new motherboard/power supply but I need my harddrive fixed! I took my hd to this data recovery place for a free evaluation and they sent me this email:

Diagnoses of your Hard Drive (Quantum Fireball Plus AS): After diagnosing your hard drive, we have successfully determined the problems related with your media:

Unstable Head Disk Assembly (Read errors Causing Filesytem structure damge)
Firmware module are corrupted ( Module need to be re written)

Firstly we have to fix the internal problem (Head Disk Assembly). We will then attempt to copy all the sectors from the defective drive to our lab media. Once the copying process is successful we will then work on the sector levels to verify the integrity of the data structure. This process may have to be repeated several times to get the desired results.

Once the recovery is complete we will provide you with a listing of the results, only upon your approval of the listing will any type of payment be processed.

The Quote for the successful recovery:

Regular Service: $1650 and the turnaround time approximated anywhere between 3 to 5 business days.

Rush Service: $ 2250 and turnaround time between 1-2 busines days. ( If possible)

We will keep you updated on the progress. If for any reason our recovery attempts fail to generate the desired results, there will be no charge incurred to you (excluding shipping charges). Please advise us as soon as possible whether to begin the process.

I don't have $1650!! And I need my data back badly! I'm crying because my whole life is on there!

Can I solve this by just replacing the circuit board from another? Although I can't risk my data by opening it up because I don't have access to a clean room. I might be able to ask one of my electronic friends if I could use their clean room if I found a solution here.

I need to know, is there a place that can do this for cheaper? Maybe below $500-600 if possible?

If I can do it myself, where can I find another Quantum Fireball Plus AS 60GB?

So how exactly did you mess up this HD?

From the report is seems as if the drive is already on its last legs. If it does have a drive head error, you're basically screwed because a circuit change won't help it. I'm not exactly a data recovery expert, but it seems as if you have to open up the drive to fix the drive head which is an incredibly sensitive device and you could easily fubar the drive more.

Does the drive work at all, by the way?

This should teach you to back up your important data once in a while if they're critical.

Good luck.

I've had hard drives die on me like that too. I've tried it all, including replacing the circuit board but I've never successfully made it work again. I think you'll either have to dig up the cash to send it in or you're SOL. Sorry about that.
