Hard drive being a problem...

Being that I have a Via chipset (asus a8v deluxe) I've needed a PATA drive in order to install Windows XP on my PC. Lately, when I do work that even touches my power cables and ata cables, my hard drive takes a half dozen or so restarts in order to get my hard drive behaving again. Here's what happens:

1. I do whatever work (install memory, move drive, etc)
2. I start er up.
3. Hard light drive stays on, stuck at the latter end of the POST, stays there. Usually after 10-20 seconds of this I turn it off.

I've somehow always managed to get it back working when I've done a combination of removing the molex connector and ATA cable (both from the drive and the board) and reattaching them. Is this a case of bad molex connector, bad ATA cable, or a bad HD?
 
Yes, it could be one of those, or something else entirely (flaky BIOS, dead battery that causes it to redetect the drive with a loss of power, gremlins), but there's not an easy way to tell from here what it is. Because the drive spins up, I'd think the ATA cable is a more likely culprit, but you can't rule out the power.

Do you have another power cable unused in the case that you can try, or another ATA cable you can try with the drive? Do you have an optical drive on the same PATA channel? If so, does that have any problems at all when you make these changes?

Nope, I keep my optical drives on the secondary bus channel always. Should I give it a shot?

Well, you could:
1. Try the optical drives on the primary and hard drive on the secondary, using the same cable you're using for the optical with the optical to verify that the primary channel is good and agrees with being used, and that using the HD on the secondary channel causes the same problem.
2. Swap the cables between the optical drives and the hard drive (keeping the HD on the primary channel) to verify that the cable is good.
