hard drive appears as removable device

Okay - this is weird.

I installed a Seagate Barracuda 80gb hard drive in his new build on Saturday. I just booted and I saw the "safely remove hardware" icon in the system tray (the little disk with the green arrow). I thought a flash drive or something had been left - but nothing. So I check it and see that the removable device is labeled: "st380817as" which is the hard drive.

Any idea why this is? I installed the SATA cable on the SATA1 on the mobo - and I've never seen this problem/issue before.

Any help is appreciated.

im pretty sure you can change the device type in control panel somewhere... :confused:
 
Doesn't the sata spec call for hot-swap ability? that would make sense that it shows up as a removable drive then... just a thought.
 
SATA is hotswap. I had a problem with my system once where it wouldn't boot linux with an sata drive plugged in. So, I unplugged it, turned it on, and then plugged in the drive once it had booted. Worked fine :cool:

I don't know if you can make it see it as not hotswappable.
 
I have the same thing basically. Different HDD but the same exact issue. I tried to get rid of it to no avail. Theres a couple of cosmetic things you can do, I don't have "how tos" anymore but you can make the hotswap/disconnect removable device icon dissapear with some tweaks. What I do is just not touch the thing, Windows hides it behind the little arrow in the taskbar.

I'm curious what what MB/chipset you have though. I personally have an Asus K8N/Nforce and I tend to think its something to do with the nforce drivers, I know people that have Via boards and no removable thing.
