hard disks communicate slowly

My home pc is a dell dimension 4600. I recently put a new hard drive in it and when I copy files in between the two drives the computer slows down quite a bit, the mouse becomes jumpy and I can't really think of why it would be doing this. Looked for new chipset drivers but haven't really found anything.

That is one of the first things I would think of too. Also are both drives using DMA assuming they are pata? How are they hooked up master/slave wise?
If possible you probably want the new drive as a secondary master. Not required, but optimal you could say.
