Ive noticed this after 5 hard drives purchased in a year.. when the drive gets old the noise it makes during read/write gets louder

Even when i fill a new hard drive it sounds quiter than the older ones

Formatting doesnt fix it, would writing zeros instead ?

The sound is coming from the actual mechanical parts of the hard drive. Formatting it isn't doing anything with the mechanical parts of the drive. The only way to make it quieter would be to get a new drive or to send it back to the manufaturer with a boat full of cash so they could refurbish it for you. Good luck.
