I purchased new PC in May (has 2-WD 250GB WD Caviar SATA II HDDs). Had problems not related to HDDs; sent PC back. PC returned, still had problems; had to reinstall Vista. Used WD Dataguard software to erase HDD. Reinstalled Vista. Inadvertently installed Vista to (what was originally) the second drive (now C:), so Vista was on both drives. Formatted second drive (now D:) to remove Vista.

Then, second HDD was not being recognized by the OS or in the BIOS. Called tech support and they suggested that I open the case and make sure everything was well seated. Everything seemed OK. Upon reboot, both HDDs visible and functioning properly for about four days. Two days ago, I tried to save a file to the second HDD and the system froze. (I had saved to the HDD without a problem, before). Rebooted and HDD not recognized; rebooted several times, still no HDD. Yesterday turned on PC and both HDDs were there again. Could save, etc. Turned off PC; would not shut down (just stayed on “shutting down” not frozen, just processing for a long time). Rebooted and second HDD gone, again.

The Tech at Avadirect thinks the HDD is a goner, but I have had them die before but they never acted like this. Should I RMA or does it sound like it could be something else?

Any suggestions would be really appreciated. Thanks!

BTW, I am not using any RAID configs.

Sounds like a drive holding on a thread of life.

Yeah, I guess you are right. I have had drives die on me before but never had this crap happen. I thought maybe a bad SATA cable or something could be to blame...
