Hey,
I'm used to buying second hand components. The one thing I don't like to buy is HDDs. Why? It seems like the first to go, with all those mechanical moving bits. How many of you buy SH HDDs? I know they're pretty hardy when not moving, (you can drop it from a feet or two on a carpeted floor and not worry about it breaking).
I'm considering buying a SH laptop drive for a portable storage unit (photography use). The reason is because I know there are a lot of people swapping out stock laptop drives for faster 5400, 7200rpm ones. Also, I don't really want to spend a lot for a new one.
Are there disk integrity checkers to make sure they wont fail on me? I know there's always a chance, but I'd like to know right away if the drive is corrupt, bad sectors, etc. Can you only use the same manufacturer's software? (Maxtor software on a maxtor drive, etc).
