Hi guys

I was looking at a friends laptop, its a Compaq Presario 2114EA, which has recently for no apparent reason been shutting down to 'prevent damage to the system.' When it boots back up it says its recovered from a serious error.

Now I've not actually seen the shutdown happen, but event viewer mentioned something about a harddrive controller error. In addition, harddisk sentinel says the disk is 100% OK, but there was some king of error and perhaps I should try a short data cable.

However its a laptop, which I guess means it plugs stright into the mobo.

When I first looked at it, IE7 would open and close right away - so I reinstalled and the problem went away. But literally 2 days later I looked again and it was doing the same thing again.

Firstly, are controllers built onto laptop harddrives?

Secondly, what are your opinions on this?
 
Laptop controllers are not replaceable. The last laptop I worked on had ALL the cooling vents completely plugged with cat hair, gave all kinds of weird errors as various parts overheated.

Solution: Shoot your cat!
