Seemingly randomly, I get an error in a ballon in the lower right of the screen saying that my hard disk can't save $MFT. I googled, but can't find any explaination of whats going on. The disk in question is a MAxtor 160 GB
I have a strange setup, my laptop only has USB 1.1, so I bought a USB 2 card, and an external box to hold the drive. Wires going everywhere. Anyway, this was the only solution, but it seems to mess up my disk.

Any ideas why I can't get the $MFT to save?

the MFT is the master file table
a dollar sign normally denotes a hidden share
and the MFT is typically hidden

offhand Id say there is a connectivity problem

check the Event Viewer under both system and application for an error or warning

i got this warning
An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\D during a paging operation.
about ten per second for about 3 minutes.

a paging operation is when your physical memory (RAM) swaps out information to the HDD
and is the most common disk access youll see as its your virtual memory

device \Device\Harddisk1\D

is a little cryptic to me since I dont run any USB externals

check that the pagefile is located on the external
go to My Computer, right click it and then choose Properties, go to the Advanced tab, click Performance Options, then click Change. Now you can view and set the parameters you need:

USB throughput is highly dependent on a number of factors, so I really wouldnt have the pagefile on that drive, lets see if it is, and if so, designate another drive
at least till we sort this out
