Is [H] waiting for the NDA on the 4870 to be lifted before they release the review on the 4850? I just ordered two 4850's with the intent of using them until the R700 release, but I want to read a legitimate review. :D
 
The NDA has already been lifted . Hence the rushed "previews and reviews" from many sites.
 
The NDA has been lifted only on performance benchmarks and the like. No detail in the hardware and what not, which gets lifted next week I believe.
 
Judging by Brents comments and hints theres likely a combined full review of 4850 and 4870 comming the 25th. But that's only what I guess from comments and hints. :)

Take a read at anand, guru3d, techreport, etc all of them give details about the hardware, technology and benches.

Hats off for Steve, Kyle and company. Instead of rushing out benches like most sites, they are taking the time to make the review the [H]ard way.

Since the 4850 has been ready for a long time I doubt this impacted reviews.


You will see the review next week on the original NDA lift. Somewhere on this forum Brent commented that they weren't going to move up their review because ATI lifted the NDA early.
 
I just hope they use the Hotfix drivers. That would give us the most accurate idea of the state of things. No rush. Take your time and do it right, fellers! ;)

P.S. I know everybody (except for Techpowerup! and eXPreview) says it "shouldn't" make a difference, but why not use an Intel chipset for ALL cards not in an SLI/Crossfire configuration?
 
AMD prematurely lifted the embargo on the 4850 only 2 days after we received that hardware. As I'm sure you guys know, 2 days is not enough time for our methods.

Because maintaining multiple test platforms is a huge pain in the ass.
 
Not having a good date on the x2 is why I went with the GTX 280, plus the fact I have a $400 SLI motherboard. At any rate, the x2 trumps the 280 and 2 months later nVidia will have an response so I am not that worried about it. Looks like AMD has now gotten back in the game and nVidia has the speed crown so it really just a matter of cost.
 
Please benchmark Age of Conan vs the 8800GTS G92 and 9800GTX, I can't find any AoC benchmarks for the HD4850.
 
i think he meant check those threads, how AoC is poorly coded and plays badly on any hardware so a new vid card wont matter

True story. The average kid runs out thinking they can build a computer since all you do is snap some parts together...then don't understand why their computer runs some games too slow. They blame the developers when it actually ends up to be they don't know what they are doing.

how often is there no data out for a product online? video cards possibly, but not often and even then people say wait, if you cant wait, you take the chance!

They give some details, but only the things you can find out for yourself if you own the card (performance, temps, stuff like gpu-z data etc.). There are no slides describing the new architecture, no detailed information on what actually makes the card superior to the 38x0 series etc. Call me geeky, but I enjoy reading about those things :)

I still don't think lifting the NDA early was a good PR move. Alot of the "previews" were rushed, with inconsistent results between reviews, reviewers that couldn't get certain games running correctly, no real detailed analysis of the results etc. But I can see why they had to lift the NDA on performance #'s. 4850 cards started appearing at online stores all over the place. You can't have an NDA on performance #s when the card is available for sale already. Let's hope AMD keeps their board partners under more strict control when they launch their next series of cards.
 
The NDA was lifted as a favor to the sites because independent benchmarks from people buying the cards early (like me) were coming out of the woodworks.

There is no reason to rush the reviews though and HardOCP is right in doing a proper job.
