Hang on XP install with SATA RAID

Hi, I just bought 2 new WD800 80gig SATA drives. I plugged them into my SATA ports and hooked everything up. I proceeded to install Windows XP from CD. I loaded both Nvidia RAID drivers as per instructions. After I load both of the things, it loads a few more files and then it says that its "setup is starting windows". Then it just sits there, the harddrives are spinning, but I don't hear anything from CD drive. Does anybody know what I am doing wrong and how I can fix it?

I'll provide you with any additional info if needbe.

I have APIC disabled in my BIOS.

I know this will sound strange, but trust me.

First use one drive, unplug the other for now.
In your bios set “Raid” to “on” and enable the SATA drives. Set your boot order to “CD-ROM” then “Hard Disk”
When you boot, in your bios screen you will see push F-? I think it’s 8 but I can’t remember, but it prompts you to push and “F-Key” to enable your RAID.
From that screen “ADD” your one drive to the array, then save and exit.

(Unless you plan to run a RAID array, then add both disks and choose how you want to configure them.)

Reboot and again in your bios screen push F-11 to select your “boot drive”, which for your first boot will be your “CD-ROM” (for your windows install)

Make sure your WIN CD is in the drive and do a fresh install, pushing F-6 when prompted and load both drivers. The install should continue fine after that and strangely once you are all installed the “RAID” will be disabled in your BIOS. (unless you did a full RAID array)

Once you get that far change boot order in your BIOS and your Boot Screen.

Add your second drive and manage it from windows. (for a non raid system)

Sounds dumb I know but I found that info on (sorry Klye) on Extreme over clocking’s forum under the MSI NEO Plat tweek section, which is still there.

Luck

Hold on, let me get this straight:

I setup the disk array with one drive then I install XP and then add in the other drive?

My overall ultimate goal is to have both drives in a RAID 0.

Your instructions got me so confused, I don't want to do this wrong.

Thanks for your help though. :)

No, read a bit more carefully. Betwen the (s) I said you can do raid and to use both drives.

Okay, I read it again, but it seems that you contradict yourself. You say to unplug one of the two drives and setup the array, but how can I setup the array if I only have one drive hooked up?

My computer has been so messed up, and all I did was add in 2 drives. :( :( :(

i have the neo 2 board also----you have to enable all 4 sata ports---or it will hang up at that spot-------trust me---ive spent hours on this......

im on an abit al8, and all of my ports are in use, the ich7r in 4 disk raid 5, sil3132 in 2 disk raid 0
works when i only load my drivers for the ich7r
fuck, windows installation is so stupid

edit: looking more and more like bad drivers
too bad i dont have a floppy drive on this laptop
damnit

i tried using the gigabyte drivers for the sil3132, but it said windows installer didnt find any usable drivers

i think i might just have to cave and install to a PATA diamondmax i have sitting around. its such a shame, i really wanted to put windows on that raid0 array

Which drivers are you using? If you're using the 6.66, try using the IDE driver from 6.53 drivers to install XP. I had this exact same problem on an NF4 board til I made a floppy with the 6.53.

Just do as he says on the initial installation of XP after the os is installed then you can add the 2nd hd as raid x

just tried this, still doesnt load even with only one drive

trying putting it in ide mode with one drive unplugged and the intel array disabled

edit: nope, that didnt work either
this is pretty fucking stupid

it will load past that point with one drive on the sil3132 but then when it gets to the select partition part, it will say 'setup cannot access disk'

i tried installing it on one of the intel sata channels
but then when i switch it over, it gives me a blue screen after the winxp flash screen scrolls for a bit

just cracked open a new 250gb diamonmax10 pata, it works fine first try
stupid windows installation
no raid0 for me

Dollars to doughtnuts says your new 250GB DM10 is faster than the 80GB Maxtors, it probably cost about the same, and you have an extra 80GB of capacity to boot

EDIT: My bad, they were Maxtors. still true though.

no, they were two 80gb diamondmax 10's
:)

so, now i hav 7 maxtor drives inside the computer, not sure how many will end up working though

so i tried installing the raid0 array udner windows
it froze at the end of the driver installation
and now it just goes to a black screen when it tries to boot
this leads me to think maybe the chip itself has gone bad
which means i might need to RMA my motherboard
which i spent hours wiring already

>_<

tried the actual silicon image drivers, same effect
i cant RMA it through newegg, i have to deal with shitty abit, who says my motherboard's SN is invalid
grrrr

ive decided to deal with it for now, and just shell out the 50 bucks when a pcie 2 port raid card comes out sometime this year
it will be a good excuse to install winxp x64 at that point

I've had my neo4 board hang on startup for a minute or so. I found that using the microsoft ide drivers instead of the nvidia drivers works best. Since I no longer use raid, I don't know how you would go about fixing your problem without nvidia ide drivers.
