Handbrake Oddness

I'm stumped. I'm using Handbrake and MakeMVV to copy my blu Ray collection to my computer. I rip using MakeMKV without any issue and only rip the main movie, audio, and forced subtitles. Here's where it gets odd.

Handbrake is giving me FITS using the following settings: Preset High Profile, 1920x1080 size, mkv file, H.264 codec, framerate same as source, automatic cropping, RF18 constant quality, AC3 Passthru audio. I've gotten ONE movie to actually complete. Anything else Handbrake freezes up at various points or on the odd occasion I get a sudden reboot of the computer. Now, if I change NOTHING but the size and go down to 1280x720, no questions asked it finishes every time. At 1080 I'm seeing from 12-16 FPS, and at 720 I usually finish with an average of 22 FPS.

Setup is a Rampage III Gene, I7 950 OC'd to 4.0 GHz (190 bclock 21 multi), 12 Gigs OCZ gold Ram 1600 slightly underclocked, the rest should be insignificant. The OC has proven to be VERY stable running Prime 95 for hours topping out at 69* C thanks to my H80 cooler. Memtest checks out fine too, no errors.

At 1080 encoding, all four cores are usually at 95-100% with temps peaking at about 64* C. At 720 encoding, I'm only seeing normally 65-70% with temps peaking at about 58* C.

I don't see any reason for the 1080 Failure. I've only had 2 reboots and about 15 Handbrake freezes since starting last week. I'd like to keep everything at 1080 because I have a 50" that these will be viewed on.

Any thoughts?

I have no idea how to fix your issue, but I am wondering about one thing: when you use MakeMKV and Handbrake, what does your file size end up being?

My 1080 was about 6.5 gigs and looks amazing, no discernable difference from the 23 gig uncompressed file. The 720 file was about 3.25 gigs and really, almost as good. I was hard pressed to see any difference. These were both viewed on my 42" 60hz 1080p LCD.
