I had asked the question before if Doom3 would run well on a graphic card such as 9800 XT 256 MB and was met with skepticism, but I was wondering, with the 9800 XT givign out a free coupon to Half-life 2, that has to run properly with that graphics card. Wouldn't you suppose?

No, it's going to run it terribly and you're going to have to buy a new video card. They're just bundling the game with the card so you'll see how truely crappy it will run the game, and thus have to buy a new video card.

Now come on, no one really knows how well the game will run on x hardware. If you want to believe the early half life 2 benchies, then yes it looks like the game will run rather smoothly.

You will probably be able to play Half Life 2 on a Geforce 4 if you want that.

Go play Far Cry. Half Life 2 won´t be anything less demanding than that and Far Cry is a really well optimized game. I can´t believe what frame rates I am getting in that game with my modest hardware. Max everything out at 1024x768 no problem. And the objects are so detailed even on my 21" I don´t need much aa.

I think Far Cry engine is a lot like the Source engine but that is just an amateur guess of course. the water seem to be very much the same looking at the previews and the special effects, lightning and shadows too.

But really to get the most out of Far Cry and Half Life 2 you need a R420 or NV40 no way around it.

Realistically, when do you suppose that thenew graphic cards will be on sale to the public though?

I agree with the Geforce 4 comment

If it doesnt play 1600x1200 full aa af, back it down somewhere. Turn the visuals off.

hl2 is also a year behind schedule, so it was designed to run on year-old hardware.

At the local gamestop they are saying the new release date is in September, so who knows what kind of hardware it's meant to run on.

Weren't they supposed to release the game last year and the reason why they didnt was because of code/beta leaks? This is a stupid comment/question, but would they have changed alot since then that would now requirie better hardware today? Im not sure if the game was fully completed at that time (if it wasnt then I'm a fool and I take back what I said).

It wasn't. That was the real reasoning behind the delay.

Max at 1024x768? What about higher? Because 1280x1024 is my preferred resolution. If it can't run that then I'd say its not that well optimized at all.

Not to get off topic... but what is the deal with 1280x1024?
Almost every other resolution is in a 4/3 aspect ratio.
1280x960 is that correct ratio

4/3 ratios
640x480
800x600 is
1024x 768 is
1600x1200 is
hell, even 1152x864 is

I just don't get why the throw 1280x1024 in there.
Anyways...

LOL Knight! Some more good useless daily info... seems like one can learn something new every day. I never knew bout those ratios. It's awesome to learn new things even if they are useless (btw no offence). Im sure they will serve purpose one day.

Anyways... OK then.... I take back what I said and I am a bloody fool. Three Cheers for ME! HIP-HIP HURRAY! HIP HIP..... I thought the reason why it was delayed was because of the leak.... which now I understand was that the game wasn't finished at that point... silly me! oh well.... I hope it comes out sometime soon and I pray that it doesnt require spending an arm and a leg on a new video card that will run it smoothly (bites his nails).

1280x1024 is common with many LCD displays, because for some unknow reason 5:4 aspect ratios became a good idea.

That's why.
