I was wondering, is there ANY of the PC verson of Half-Life 2 that does not use stupid steam programe? Not everyone has high speed net, so im assuming something was done for us dialup users, or did we happen to just get the blind eye from a great game?

I played the collectors verson however it took me 7 darn hourse just using staem to get the downloading part done. witch is insane.

if there is no such thing as a half life 2 game thats not using staem or its addones not using steam then is there some mod or patch i can download that will allow me to play the games with out the requerment of steam?

I dont really want to download a program but if there is no other way then, what ya gonna do?

Nope, I don't think so.

I am forced to use dial-up as well because nothing else is available to me.
I start the download before bed and play the next day.
I hope downloading games doesn't become a standard because many, many people still are forced to use dial-up.

If you purchased HL2, you'll notice that a broadband connection to the internet was on the list of system requirements. There is no legal way to play HL2 without the Steam client, and posting any information about how to play it illegally would violate the rules here.

Your best bet is to find a broadband connection you can plug into, and download the game files; then just keep running Steam in offline mode so you don't have to deal with updates when you are connected to the net.

I'm sure this wasn't the answer you were looking for, but it's the only answer to be had as far as I know. I hope you find a solution, I know it can suck being stuck on dial-up.

Finding a alterative way to play HL2 by not using steam is illegal?

anyways i hope that not all games need that steam thing to, that was really stupid to use that thing. what where they thinking? gah!

anyways i cant get high speed due to living in the sticks and satalite costs to darn much =/

this sucks.. well atlest i can play the old half life and its add ons with out steam =) gonna miss playing HL 2 though.. i wonder how the story goes in the two new add ons.

Yes. The Steam client is how Valve operates, and they have no workaround for it on purpose.

Instead of downloading, you could always choose to buy the box set and install from the CD/DVD. You would still need to have the Steam application open, but it would save the unbearable download time.

how does that work? dont you still need steam to play? and the box sets, are you talking about a new one? or the old ones?

Buying the games on CD/DVD. That way you don't need to download the entire game but you still need stream to play it. Then you only have to download updates and any games that do not come on the disc that you may want to play.

is there a way to to play the games with out having steam connect to the net at all? my gaming PC cant go online, somethings wrong with the modem or browser or something but yeah anyways.

You have to connect to steam once to verify the game , after that you can run steam in offline mode.

does that take long? when i was using half life 2 collecters all it did was update steam then downloaded for hours on ehnd ......

OK, I was kind of assuming you had the box edition. You do right? You still have to activate HL2, which can take awhile; but there's no alternative. The PC you want to install HL2 on will need to connect to the internet, and the download could take quite awhile on dial-up, but you won't have to re-connect to continue playing it, just once. It should show up under the steam applications area, once you double click HL2, it will start to download the activation patch so it can be played.

Steam is a form of copy protection, and bypassing it is illegal; and discussing methods of bypassing copy protection is against the forum rules.
