Half-Life 2 Pre-Loading Phase 3
September 10, 2004, 3:07 pm · valve
The third phase of the Half-Life 2 preload begins to Steam account holders today.

This will allow users to download the majority of the models of Half-Life 2 in encrypted form. No purchase is required to pre-load Half-Life 2, but is required to activate the game. The moment the game is made available, those who have pre-loaded and purchased Half-Life 2 via Steam will be ready to start playing right away.

was just about to post this. guess ill be getting this started when i get home from work. :D

Guys.....
sorry, but I have a question related to steam:

Once you are finished downloading everything in your hard disk, what will you do when you hae to format the HDD and want to reinstall it?

Download everything again?

I mean, I can see that having steam will get you to play as soon as the game is out, but CDs are crucial!!! no?

hopefully valve will have a way that you can make a backup of your half life 2 install/files. if not then youd be out of luck and would have to dl and install it again and again and again.... wouldnt it be simpler to buy the actual cd version of the game. plus this way you get a spiffy manual to read while on the pooper and a flashy box :D

you can copy the files in the steam apps folder onto a dvd or sumthin to back it up then when u reformat, jus put it back into the steam apps folder... also copy your e-mail folder for all your maps and settings... this is the best way to do it

Of course we've all had those unfortunate times where we had to format and we didn't have a chance to backup. CDs for me.

i just reformatted and i had to back up to like 5 dvds and a few cds... and i didn't even back up everything... i just backed up what was important, cauz i can't afford all those dvds... theyre xpensive...

Meh...it's meaningless until you can activate the game, which won't be for another 2 mos. or so.

How many phases are there? At this rate, no reason why the game shouldn't be release in October.

I doubt it will be released in Oct, but I bet it'll go gold by then. I wonder if they'll let people unlock their steam purchased versions when it goes gold, or when it's actually supposed to be available on the shelves.

Probabley 4, the game shouldn't be larger than 4 gigs.

Anyone else thinks that these so called encrypted files will be unlocked by hackers and the game will be available without paying a cent since preloading doesnt cost a thing

I thikn they only shouldve let preloading for the people that are pre-ordered the game

Also.. I remember seeing an article about valve hiring bram cohen (bit torrent guy) to work on the steam...

does the preloading partially work like bit torrent then ?

Not possible.

A year ago if someone told you that the whole source code of HL2 might leak to masses.. you wouldve said the same thing

Well we have textures, sounds, and models...at about 2.5 Gigs. Looks like we have about another Gig left. Maybe a few more models. But all I can see is left is maps and then the actual program files. :D It's getting closer and closer.

they might be able to decrpyt it but... they didn't decrypt the condition zero files did they?

There was no need since they already had it months ago..... Remember if one person can think of it then another can think it too and undo it... Plus if a bank can get hacked then valves stuff especially after having their holes open and then the password for gabe rofl... i wouldn't be surprised if its just encrypted with a shareware program! :p

Well I assume that if everyone for once was going to go as planned, then Valve will send the gold disc to Vivendi on the 15th, I really do not see that process taking over a month and a half after that. PLus, the this preload is usre on top of things. It's finally all coming together.

You guys do realize that you can use the CD key that comes with the boxed version of HL2 to play the game immediately, don't you? The way I see it, you get the best of both worlds: instant gaming and a reliable backup in case of a failure.

All the preload files contains just maps, textures, audio, artwork, models, etc. and that's it. No game exe's, probably not much engine coding. Essentially, everything vital to a game, is not included in the preload.

I just gotta say...Who really gives a fuck? It's more worthless hype.

This might be valuable news if I was on dialup, and I planned to buy it via download.

My apologies to those on dialup that plan to buy it via download..

Valve will go bankrupt on bandwidth bills alone.

Steam loads data cache via P2P file sharing, correct me if I am wrong.
So Valve makes $29 bucks for Condition Zero, and pays none (Very very small amount) of the bandwidth costs. It's just shared bandwidth of people who already have the game, or are currently downloading it.

I think they're making tons of money, games are just WAITING there for you to play, all you have to do is hand over your CC and you can play it. It's a wonderful ploy, and works well - I bought CZ, which was probably worst $29 I ever spent on a game, IMO.

while this usualy works, ive had it a few times where steam wont recognize the gcf or whatever file correctly and thinks that the content is corrupted. Then you have to redownload the entire thing again anyway.........

steam is P2P? really?

Why don't i see any outbound traffic, then? I really think you are wrong about this.

As for pre-load, I would agree that the game is probably about 4 gig's of stuff and we'll get the final engine code when it goes gold. We'll also be able to play it as soon as the gold version of the code is available. . .valve has stated that numerous times.

They've also stated that vivenda (spelling?) or wtf they are called will NOT let them release it on steam before its available on shelves. IE extra wait for nothing for us steam people...

Well, another guy already said Brahm Coen who created Bit-torrent will be working with Valve on Steam. That's his whole reason for coming up with Bit-Torrent, offering a way for companies to distribute software over the internet without having to spend a fortune in bandwidth costs.
