Half Life 2 crashes immediately

I had been playing through Portal, and got to level 15, and now I can't get any farther. Why? Every time I try to load Portal, or any other HL2 game, through Steam it immediately crashes and Windows says:

hl2.exe has stopped working
Windows can check online for a solution BUT IT WON'T FIX ANYTHING!

Help, please? I updated my video card drivers, updated Direct X, and ran dxdiag with no errors. I'm running an 8800GTX and Vista Ultimate 32-bit, if that matters at all.

The same could be asked of you:rolleyes: . Why bother to harass the guy over the use of the word pentium otherwise?

Glad you got it fixed OP. Steam forums is usually the best place to find fixes for issues with Steams games.

Im not harassing anyone. I know that there are still a few Pentuims being made and wasnt sure exactly what his cpu was. Obviously he doesnt know or either mistyped his cpu since I dont think there is a such a thing. His stupid reply only indicates that he his either a child or has the maturity of one.
 
I had problems in HL2 Ep2 with crashing about a month ago. there were 3 spots in the game, 3 VERY specific spots, that would crash every time if I looked at the right thing. the first time It was impossible to avoid looking at something that would crash the game, so I had to download a save file that someone posted about 30 feet after that spot. the other two times I ran through the areas while looking at the floor.
