Had to take down my A64 :(

Last night I was watching my bit torrent download progress while my gamer was folding, and the gamer kept kicking out WU's for instability, including 2 or 3 600 pointers :( It kicked out 8 or 9 WU's in a row almost instantly, even after I fired up clockgen and lowered to OC to 0%. So, I shutdown F@H, reset clockgen to my max OC (267 FSB, 2T, 2.5-3-3-7 on my Asus A8N-SLI deluxe with A64 3000+,1 gig of Corsair of PC3200XLpro (2x 512) EVGA 6800GT @ ultra speed, one 120 gb seagate HD, one pioneer DL DVD burner, Antec TP550 EPS PSU) and fired up Prime 95 on Large FFTs max heat test, burned the 4 cd's from the bit torrent d/l, installed the program and went to bed, got up this morning, Prime95 is still chugging away, CPU temp was 44-45C (watercooled with dangerden stuff, 110 v pump and criticool II so no drain on PSU) I'm at a loss here, this machine has kicked literally hundreds of WU's so all I can figure is some kind of incompatibility between all my components and F@H. Last resort, when I get home tonite if prime95 hasn't died, I will reboot into a tech cd I have and run memtest 86. Lets hope I dont' have to test out corsair's warranty policy.

Also on a side note, the stormy season has hit, while I have excellent power on my garden at home, I can't say the same at work, I now have to shutdown my P4 2.0 at work when I'm not there. :( (the boss would kill me if he found out my PC was slaughtered cause I left it on, but otherwise it's mine to do with as I wish) Yeah, I've got an excellent line conditioner/surge supressor, but I'm going to have to talk them into getting some small UPS's around here. Plus work PC only has dial up, so it could get a double whammy from lightning. Rats!!! The only good news I have is I have become the official "recycler" for one of the local PC repair shops, so I should have plenty of parts to spread around in the next few weeks.

P.S. for those wondering, I originally ran the graphical client, I switched to the console client, that's what was running last night when the latest round of bounced WU's started :(

The 600 pointers are sensitive to memory controllers. A few of us had problems with dual channel Athlon XP systems. I haven't heard of your type of problem with an A64 system.

Hopefully someone else has something constructive to say.

Good luck.

Well it sounds like you've got a handle on what tests to run. Not much else can be said until you have some sort of idea there. My guess would probably be ram though, it seems that F@H seems to be real sensitive to ram issues that otherwise aren't affecting anything else. Let us know when you find something out!

yeah it could be my memory controller, I have lapped the IHS on that chip because it was so concave in the middle it wouldn't make good contact with my DD TDX waterblock, but I remember the important numbers, it's the infamous 0439 winnie :( Well maybe if that's what it turns out to be I can afford a venice soon.

I have run into something similar a few times before. As a rule it happens after I install something or, more often, run a disk defrager. In each case the cure was simple. Delete the cores in the folding directory, replace the .exe file. After that total stability again.

Give it a try, won’t cost you a cent ;)

memtest ran clean for 5 full passes, an hour and 15 minutes, prime 95 stress test ran for over 20 hours without an error also. I will delete the files and reinstall, that's all I know to do also.

hmm, what i thought was regarded as stable for memtest was letting it run overnight...just a thought...

Not when I have a new game to play, 5 passes was all I could wait for :)
I uninstalled F@H, did a regedit to clean all traces, reinstalled and started it up, it ran fine and was folding a piddly 66 point gromacs just fine when I left for work t his morning. I suppose it's possible I had a lightly corrupted file or something similar, I'll let you guys know how the gromac did when I get home.

Actually, now that you mention it, I believe there has been some talk lately of core's going corrupt. You'd have to search, but I believe most of this talk centered around core 78, and it just took blowing it out, and leting F@H redownload it.

Well I won't rule out my hardware just yet, WoW crashes like a b***ch, but I'm not the only one that that happens to LOL. it may have been core 78, I would not swear anything now. If it's still dropping WU's when I get home, I'll remove it and just play games with it I guess, and chalk it up to the 0439 winnie, I've heard that week had the most weak memory controllers. Venice is on it's way, right? :)

I think you are right phantom. I was going over my logs and apparently gromacs has been updated from 1.78 to 1.80 so hopefuly that might fix the problem, Ronbo. :)

not to belabor the minor point in your orig post, but do you unplug the computer after you turn it off at work? Correct me if i'm wrong but a surge can still occur if the thing is off. You'd have to unplug it from both the phone line and power lines for it to be safe. Just turning it off doesn't afford much protection.

I'm assuming you guys have surge protectors as well?

yes, I have a high dollar Belkin surge suppressor that also covers the phone line. If I want to unplug it, I only have to pull one plug from the wall. We have never lost any PC equipment to lightning, but we have lost some CNC power input parts to lightning.

Anymore a good surge strip is a requirement. My apartment is on the same circuit as a dumpster sized trash compactor. Everytime someone throws something away the lights flicker. I've actually spent a small fortune on decent electrical protection to keep all my stuff safe.

Well, so far so good, it finished the 1278 gromacs with no errors today (78 core) and is now chewing on a 638 tinker with the 65 core. Thanks for all the help everyone.

sweet, congrats on the return of a strong boxen!

Yeah, not only is it back folding with a vengance, I fixed my WoW crashes too, only took an hour of searching their tech support forums. :) now all I need are some 28 hour days to get everything done :)
