Certain scientists believe that our habit of using anti-bacteria everything may actually cause more harm than good, which isn’t new news. What is interesting however is how some people have been treating certain ailments with doses of bacteria.

"Probiotics (pills containing bacteria) have resulted in complete elimination of eczema in 80 percent of the people we've treated," says Dr. Joseph E. Pizzorno Jr., a practicing physician and former member of the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy. Pizzorno says he's used probiotics to treat irritable bowel disease, acne and even premenstrual syndrome. "It's unusual for me to see a patient with a chronic disease that doesn't respond to probiotics."

Being a dirty slob might finally pay off..:)

Germs FTW!

Well, this is hardly anything at all new. It's existed in nature for millions of years. Most animals wouldn't be able to digest food if not for bacteria (for example, many animals such as elephants naturally consume the waste of adults to gain this necessary bacteria). Nowadays, we have the benefit of buying bacteria like acidophilus in a much more enjoyable form.

Don't use it as an excuse to stop washing your hands, though. Fecal poisoning of food is still the primary cause of food-poisioning deaths.

Yep.

No sir you should not be a dirty slob. Probiotics are bacteria that live in you intestine & help you absorb nutrients from the food. We are there host so they do not kill us but help us digest our food. I think these are some how deposited in your intestine when your either in the womb or thru mothers milk.. I am not sure BUT with eating alot of processed food or maybe the cholorine or fluoridation of water people lose good bacteria & thats when they need to take probiotics. You can also take them if u have issues digesting food. Alot of bacteria found in probiotics are also found in good yougurts like stonyfield ogranics. If you do decide to take probiotics. I highly recommend Natren probiotics. Also if you ever take Cipro or any strong antibiotics make sure you follow thru with taking a full course of probiotics. You can also take them for acne & stuff..google it!

10x more bacteria in your body than the number of human cells. Think about that.
I'm waiting for someone to come out with the probiotic equivalent to a multivitamin. Something with, say, the 4 or 5 most important bugs for your gut.
The part about gut flora and links to obesity was also interesting. Could it be that Americans are in general overweight because they are the highest consumer of antibiotics per capita in the world?

Yevaud, I have made a few changes to your question, in order to make it correct.
<snip>Americans are in general overweight because they are the highest consumer of Big-Mac's per capita in the world

Antibiotics use, while it helps when you need it... I wonder if we are just killing off the weak bacteria and viruses, and leaving the ones which can tolerate anti-biotics to be passed on to others?

Got to agree there. While I am an OBESSIVE washer, I actively try to NOT use anti-biotic products, though lately that is all you can get.

Humans and other animals do need some kinds of bacteria in their bodies to digest food, kill harmful bacteria, etc.

That's why I think that giving antibiotics to children with colds and other viral infections should be punishable by law, for both the parents and the doctors.
