• Some users have recently had their accounts hijacked. It seems that the now defunct EVGA forums might have compromised your password there and seems many are using the same PW here. We would suggest you UPDATE YOUR PASSWORD and TURN ON 2FA for your account here to further secure it. None of the compromised accounts had 2FA turned on.
Once you have enabled 2FA, your account will be updated soon to show a badge, letting other members know that you use 2FA to protect your account. This should be beneficial for everyone that uses FSFT.

Hackers can be a frustrating bunch or a source of entertainment, all according to which side of the hacking fence you are on. In this case in Delaware, it seems that no one really minds the unauthorized entry into the sign’s computer system and subsequent revised message. One man’s vandalism is another’s highway comic relief. :D

I don't see any harm. It's not like those signs ever give you something useless.

Funny.

Though the article just goes to show how little about actual technology people actually know. They claimed the password was weak on the computer stored inside of it. However reality is, password strength is irrelevant if I have access to the physical box. I doubt the person who did it, did much more then run one of many common password deleting or cracking softwares off a USB stick. It took him 5 minutes tops. I say that because I recover people's passwords off windows machines all the time and it takes me at most 5 minutes to do on any PC.

They probably didn't even do that. They're probably just all set to the same default password by whoever manufactures them.

Doubt they did that. I did a search. There a key combination to rest the password to default.

default password is DOTS :p

don't see the harm?

well... since the poor DOT guys get killed by moron drivers frequently enough further distracting people coming into a construction area seems like a dangerous idea.

or

say before sign read "BRIDGE OUT"

after sign read "ZOMBIES BEHIND YOU FLOOR IT" :)

maybe part of being an adult is realizing just because you could do something doesn't mean you should. how about hackers and pranksters just decide to leave the god damn DOT signs alone.

Point was, even if the password was not the default hacking the terminal is far from difficult. They are changing the password, again physical access = Doesn't matter what the password is. That is all I am saying.

While I agree with you 100% about safety for these guys, I did find it funny. I guess the same reason people have schadenfreude.

I bet the changing it to "live nudes ahead" actually made most pay more attention to the road ahead.

well maybe of the DoT didn't keep road signs out there for all of eternity even if there's no work going on this wouldn't be a problem.

Right, I'm sure the traffic alert signs have USB ports that will load windows programs that will allow you to bruteforce the password and are exactly like windows machines so your logic is completely correct.

:/

Actually, if you get passed the access panel this is what you'll see:

This is what is used to enter the text for the signs and it is password-protected. In this case I'm 99% sure they were using the password "password", "1234", "abcd" or something just as trivial that was easy to guess.

I always found it funny that people hack those signs so easily. You'd think the workers would learn and use a better password. Though one has to be quite brave to go and hack one, given you're in clear view of all traffic and will probably be seen by many witnesses. There's a decent chance one of them will not think it's funny and call the cops.

all you really need to avoid that is to have a green fluorescent vest and maybe a hardhat.

Relevant traffic information sucks. Bring on the LIVE NUDES. :D

all the traffic alert signs in southern California say click it or ticket

how useful is that information really? if you bought a car in the last 15 years it'll beep at you till you buckle your seatbelt

such a waste of money to have those things even on

2 miles from my house....

I remember reading on 4Chan (i know i know) a thread about the default PW's that everyone uses for these things. Supposedly it's usually like the model number of the device or something, or written in sharpie under the KBD.

A little disappointed there was no "All your base" action on that one.

When the seatbelt sensor in my car took a shit, every time the car came to a complete stop, it would whine about the seatbelt. Doesn't matter if opened a door or not. Stop and go traffic was horrible for like two weeks...I was gonna rip out all my speakers to stop that thing.

There's a way around the seatbelt beep thing... well at least in a 2006 Ford F350 there is :D

Here we go RSA has come clean.

RSA Security, a division of EMC Corp. has admitted that it was the victim of a sophisticated attack that resulted in the theft of secrets related to its SecurID two-factor authentication product.

The disclosure came in a blog post by RSA chief Art Coviello on Thursday. Coviello said that the company faces attacks every day, but had recently become aware of

"an extremely sophisticated cyber attack in progress," which he characterized as being "in the category of an Advanced Persistent Threat (APT)." RSA's investigation subsequently concluded that the attackers had made off with company secrets, including "information...specifically related to RSA's SecurID two-factor authentication products."
SecurID is RSA multi-factor authentication technology. SecurID includes a range of technologies used to implement multi-factor authentication tools like one-time password generators and secure access cards. Corporations and other organizations use SecurID to give employees secure access to resources such as corporate networks over virtual private network (VPN) connections, e-mail and other assets.

Hackers doing everyone in wtf

I've helped setup a couple of these signs, the newer ones operate over blue-tooth, so you can connect from any laptop or cell phone, and the default password is either 0000, or the 4 digits of the unit ID, which would not take long to brute force.

Thank you so much. found another use for my netbook besides car diagnostics and surfing the net.

:D:p
In other words. Story is funny.
