Hackers Make Cars Safer

The problem isn't hackers. Car companies that insist on having an entertainment system connected to engine controls and steering systems are the problem.

The bill follows several vulnerabilities uncovered by white-hat researchers. Last summer, security researchers Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek demonstrated how they could wirelessly take over the connected entertainment system in a Jeep Cherokee to take control of the car’s steering, brakes and transmission. As a result of this research, Chrysler created a security patch and issued a recall for 1.4 million vehicles.

But we reduced costs by not having a separate computer for entertainment!

Its not just the entertainment systems at risk. The vehicle monitoring systems like OnStar and Starlink Plus are equally vulnerable.

I just can't fathom why engine control/steering/braking computers would have any wireless capability OR any data connection to any other non-critical computer in the car.

Those systems should be isolated. A moat. There should be no way in hell that anything short of a diagnostic plug in the port should communicate with the keep-you-alive systems.

Even scarier is that the same setup is used on commercial airliners. You can hack into flight control systems by going through the frigging entertainment system.
