The private investigating firm that was actually advertising the fact that they had a hacking division is in hot water. Two men, who were actually police officers, were convicted of phone bugging and computer hacking.

But they were dubbed "Hackers Are Us" in court for the "extras" they offered for a wealthy elite. They used illegal means to provide extra services for clients and had a price list for those services.

Stupid. I have a friend who owns a PI firm, and they do some shady stuff, but they don't "advertise" that fact. It might come up in casual conversation with clients....("Hey, it's too bad we can't bug his phone, huh? Man that would be great, eh? How much would you pay to be able to do something like that, ah? Yeah, but it's still illegal, doesn't that bother you?")

I don't know what to think about private investigators. I found out one was in my yard spying on a neighbor (his ex was trying to get him declared an "unfit father"). If I knew she was in my yard at the time I would have happily called the cops on her. On the other hand, a PI really saved my brother's butt during a divorce - found out she was cheating on him (so she wasn't able to completely take him to the cleaners as most women do). I guess you got the good with the bad.
