There is an article over at Toms (please don kill me Kyle) about how with a little sofware hacking you can turn on software RAID 5 support from Windows Server on in WinXP. Apparently its been hiding in there all the time.

It appears a hex editor and an hour or less is all you need. !

well that depends on the filesystem and OS
and if you arent fully employing those CPU cycles...

Linux software RAID is quite common
 
A number of questions need to be answered, like if you take the drives out of one comp, and put it in another, can you reform the array w/ data in tact. Same with format c:. I could live with ok performance if its flexible.
 
I have two partitions on each of my drives that have been turned into a raid 0 array. I must say it's a lot faster for loading games. Seek times suck, but that's okay and it's a general problem with raid 0. Basically, don't mock it till you try it.
