H60 saturation

*Before I begin, yes - i know corsair's closed loops are not real wc by any means, so please don't flame for that =) I've run custom loops in the past, and I picked up the H60 for convenience, minimalistic block, and temps that could compete with the best air coolers while not having the same dB output.*

I have a 2600k that's OC'd and running at ~1.38v happily. Except I think that my Corsair H60 with push/pull Gentle Typhoon fans on it is right on the verge of being saturated by the loop. A minor move of my system that slightly changed circulation took the temps from maintaining high 70s under load indefinitely to now slowly creeping up as if the loop simply slipped onto the other side of the equilibrium line and now can't dissipate the heat fast enough. It takes quite some time under constant load, but there's the definite difference that it no longer holds stable temps.

While I could try to adjust either physical location or other minor issues to swing back to the other side and maintain temp on the loop, I'm more worried that this setup is just treading the line of adequacy. I'm a little hesitant to put a custom loop back in, as I haven't played with them in years and as much fun as it is, it's a little bit of a headache, not to mention doing it in the silverstone rv-02 case. However, while I know some of the air coolers (noctua) actually can put out some slightly better numbers than corsair's closed loops, I hate a) the giant block hanging off the socket, and b) the increased noise.

Is there anything else you can think of to remedy my situation, or is really my best alternative for maintaining the OC that this chip is clearly capable of to go with a real wc loop?
 
which GT120s are you running? are they controled or running flat out?
 
Believe the ones I put on there were AP15's, although they may have been AP14's. In either instance, they're running at max.
 
wow, really? 2 1850 rpm fans won't hold it?

well, don't go reseating the block just based on my opinion...wait for others to chime in, but I think something else is wrong, what is airflow in your case like?
 
Airflow is actually really solid as the rv02 is known to be a great case in those regards, and temps on my oc'd 6950's on air are what I would expect, so I feel that general circulation isn't the problem.

And its not that I'm particularly surprised (maybe I should be) at the H60 being right on the edge as most everything I've ever seen is that 2600k @ ~5ghz is about the limit for good air, which is about where I believe this H60 loop comes in cooling capacity wise. I guess I just didn't think it was quite that close to saturation, or maybe I am doing something wrong. I'd consider dropping a H100 in for the closed loop easiness and supposed upgrade; but the modding and cost required at that point just lead me to doing a real wc loop.
 
how do you have it oriented? and do you have pictures? At this point, id suggest reducing the air turbulence inside of your case as much as possible: aka, keep all the air flowing in the same direction.

Make everyththing blow from bottom to top. If you have a side fan blowing in, disconnect it and retest. you may find your temperatures get better.

Of course, swap the air cooler for the H60, but there's no real turbulence introduced by out of line fans, and the design is setup to keep a pretty solid airflow from bottom to top with the cards in-line so that flow-path's are pretty continuous.
 
You say you made a small move. You introduced a change. Perhaps slightly unseating the base from the proc. I'd try re-tightening the screws before you go apeshit and start replacing parts.
 
I can place the system back in a place where it gets mildly better intake and it goes back to maintaining temperature and not slowly climbing.
 
In that case I would play with the orientation of the rad/fan and see if you can get back to previous levels.

Have you tried a long term test to see how high it will go? It may stop at acceptable levels.
 
Haha, sadly that's what brought this all about - I had left the rig folding after moving it and hadn't thought much of it when I left after several hours and it had crept up ever so slightly, but was still acceptable. It wasn't til I got back and saw that the loop was officially not bleeding off heat fast enough and was pushed into horrible temps, which ended up with me investigating more. On the bright side, all through this the system never crashed out, which at least gives me some confidence in the oc on my chip, and makes me even more want to see how much further I culd push it given the right cooling.

The rad can't really be moved much in this area without modding, so I think I'll just reposition the system for better circulation so that the H60 will suffice for the time being. As much as I'd love to drop a new loop in there right now, I think I'm going to wait until new gpus (7 series) --> new full cover gpu blocks --> expansive loop for everything at once.

Are the fans plugged into the H60 or into your motherboard?

I talked with a friend of mine and he had a similar issue with his H60 until he just put the fans on the mobo.
