h50 problem?

Finally put together my computer today. I'm getting unreasonably high on my i7 2600k (87-88C). Ambient temp was around 22C. I have not installed anything yet and that was the temps I saw from BIOS. I think I installed the H50 correctly. I took off the cpu block to see if anything was wrong.

If you are getting 87-88C then it is NOT installed properly. When I installed an H60 I forgot to connect the power the first time and the temps were 99C for a second before I came to my senses.

Clean off all of your paste and try again. Also check all of your connections.
 
that looks like waaaaay too much cpu paste IMO. line down the middle. and also check your bracket and see if they're on correctly. it shouldn't wiggle around if you try to move it.

Is the top of the block getting hot to the touch? if so, then the pump is dead and its not doing its job.
 
too much paste but that wont cause that high of temps. is the pump running?

double check your mounting and use a single rice size drop of paste in the center and try again
 
if its not seated properly then the temps can go wonky. The force needed to get a good seat is way more than you would expect.
 
+1 on the amount of thermal paste your using. Definately go with a grain of rice or a small line down the middle. Plus I would make sure when you plug your pump in check to make sure bios isn't controlling it just run it on full.
 
did you by chance connect the pump to the cpu fan controller?
 
Corsair preapplied a lot of paste on their H50. I'll try again with some MX-2. Let's see if it'll do the job.
 
I've only built 2 wc setups for friends, but everytime the waterblock on the cpu was always tricky to get mounted evenly and with the right pressure. Like everyone else has said, thats what i'd check first.

Just looked that thing up, interesting. I assume its more effective than an air cooler? Or is it just a low noise thing? With no reservoir and such a small radiator it looks...well, alot more modern than what i've used, lol. Nice and compact though.
 
Check your bak plate. Sometimes when I screwed down my h50 the inserts on the back would pop out of the holes in the motherboard.

I too have an h50 and mx-2 paste on a 2600k
 
Okay, just applied a new batch of TIM (MX-2). Idles at 28-30C, and running prime95 now. It's at 60C. Hopefully, no problems will arise over night.

Glad that your temps are better. BTW, I don't think it was the stock paste (because they do gob Shin Etsu on), but The mounting for the h50 is not as 'great' and 'easy' as the videos make it out to be. (I should know, I've owned one).

The mounting back plate wasn't designed for true 1155 mobos, which means it needs to be modified on some mobos (My Asus Max Gene-z for example). The mounting inserts can crack since they're plastic and there's no direction on how tight to tighten the bolts. One person may use a mini screw driver, another may use a 12v drill with a clutch.
