I remember seeing a thread that mentioned a problem with H20 cooling 7800's as the card would shutdown without the fan. I am about to upgrade so I would like to know if this an issue.
yes - my rig is more living proof that they watercool just fine. That shutdown without a fan signal issue was fixed with a bios update... it's ancient history. Also - the 6800 series *gpu only* water blocks work fine on the 7800 series cards. then you just use ram sinks for the memory, if you are so inclined. Good luck with the upgrade.
From first hand experience be sure to attach your ramsinks with a 2-part epoxy from Arctic Silver. The adhesive didn't stick for shit and everytime I nuged one it fell off. Just bare in mind that epoxy = permanent.
Oh and one more thing and the MOST important, be sure to get a water block that can clear the top two ransinks or you'll be modifying (cutting) down their fins. I bought two Maze 4 GPU (SLI version) blocks and in fine print it warns about that. Needless to say I didn't read the doc until I already had them in my posession.
yepp.... I used the new swiftech ramsinks on my newest build and they are very nice... if you need to trim one or two down because of small clearance they are very easy to trim (snip the tops of the posts vs cut the fins) *and* the thermal adhesive which comes with them is actually pretty good... you can't bump them hard without them coming off, but it does hold pretty well and it conducts heat very well.. I was surprized. I had to use a low-pro maze on one of my cards because of the single slot space on the SLI-D DFI board between the pci-e slots... anyways.. that's all I have to say about that.
